Description

Cult of the Lamb hands you a possessed lamb, a glowing Red Crown, and a debt to a chained god that you repay by building a flock between dungeon runs. New cult leaders who keep watching their followers starve or turn against them while they fight in Darkwood will find the right order of priorities here. The biggest early gain comes from recruiting toward the follower gates, since Anura stays locked until seven living followers call your base home.

How to Play Cult of the Lamb as a Roguelike Cult Sim

Cult of the Lamb splits your time between two jobs: fighting through roguelike dungeon runs called crusades, and running a cult base where followers work and worship you. Each crusade brings home gold coins, food and recruits, which you then spend on buildings that make the next run stronger.

Massive Monster built the game, and Devolver Digital released it on August 11, 2022, for PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It sold over one million copies in its first week. That early success later carried it onto iPhone and iPad.

The loop clicked for me the first time a rescued follower started farming while I was still deep in Darkwood. Mobile players often compare it with Moonlighter and Dead Cells, and the overlap is real. However, neither of those games asks you to keep a whole village fed, faithful and alive.

How a Crusade Run Works From Map to Bishop Door

A crusade starts on a branching map of nodes. Each node marks a combat room, a shop, a follower rescue, a resource stop or a boss. You pick a path, clear rooms one at a time, and decide when the risk is worth the next reward.

Dying ends the run, but it does not wipe everything. A failed crusade still lets you keep about 75 percent of the resources you gathered, which softens a bad fight. Weapons and boosts found inside the dungeon reset, though, so the base is where lasting power lives.

The Lamb, the Red Crown and The One Who Waits

The story opens as the four Bishops of the Old Faith execute the Lamb, the last of its kind, to stop a prophecy. A chained god called The One Who Waits revives the Lamb and hands over the Red Crown. His price is simple: build a cult in his name and kill the bishops who imprisoned him.

The tone mixes soft, cute art with grim acts. In one moment you bless a smiling frog, and in the next you might offer it on an altar. That contrast is the whole joke, and it works because the game never winks too hard at it. Ratau, the old cult leader who helps you settle in, adds a dry sense of humor to the early hours.

How It Compares to Moonlighter and Dead Cells on Mobile

Moonlighter is the closest mobile cousin. Both games send you into procedural dungeons and then home to spend the haul. The difference is what waits at home, because Moonlighter gives you a shop to stock while this game gives you living followers who can sicken, rebel or die.

Dead Cells offers sharper, faster combat and a much steeper skill curve. By contrast, the Lamb’s fights are shorter and more forgiving, and the depth comes from base-building instead. Don’t Starve: Together shares the survival pressure, yet it has no dungeon runs to break up the farming.

Apple Arcade Edition vs the PC and Console Version

Cult of the Lamb Arcade Edition runs on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro. It ships with every major update and expansion released before its launch, plus follower forms and base decorations that no other platform gets. Touch controls handle combat well, since runs are short and rooms stay compact.

The PC and console versions are a one-time purchase, while the Arcade Edition comes with an Apple Arcade subscription. PC and console players also received the Woolhaven expansion first. No official Android release exists, so Android owners need a PC, a console or a Switch to play a legitimate copy.

Combat Controls, Weapons, Curses and Fervour

Every crusade in Cult of the Lamb arms the Lamb with one random weapon and one random curse, plus a dodge roll that never changes. That randomness forces you to adapt instead of repeating one build. Five core weapon types appear in the base game: sword, axe, dagger, gauntlets and hammer.

Curses run on Fervour, a blue bar that fills as you land hits. On a touchscreen, the layout stays simple, because the game only needs movement, attack, dodge and curse inputs.

Tarot cards form the third layer. They stack passive boosts on top of whatever weapon and curse the run gave you. So a weak opening roll can still turn into a strong run by the midpoint.

Weapon Types, Bonus Effects and the Dodge Roll

The dagger hits fast with short reach, while the hammer and axe swing slower but clear crowds. Gauntlets chain quick punches, and the sword sits in the middle. Each weapon can also roll a bonus effect, such as poison, life steal or faster charge on your curse.

The dodge roll gives brief invincibility, and I treat it as the most important input in the game. Most early deaths come from greedy combos, not from low damage. Next, check the level shown on each weapon pickup, because a higher level deals far more damage than a fancy effect. A later update added the Blunderbuss, which suits players who prefer to keep their distance.

Curses and the Fervour Bar

Curses are ranged or area attacks, such as fireballs, tentacles and projectile bursts. Each cast drains Fervour, so you can’t spam them. Instead, you build the bar by fighting up close and then spend it when a room gets crowded.

Some curses scale far better than others. I rank area attacks above single shots in Anchordeep, because its rooms fill with swarming enemies. Covering your weapon’s weak spot matters more than raw damage numbers.

Tarot Cards and Room Rewards After Each Clear

Clauneck, a fortune teller who sets up shop inside dungeon rooms, lets you draw tarot cards that last until the run ends. Cards grant effects like extra hearts, quicker attacks or more Fervour per hit. Two good cards early can carry a mediocre weapon through an entire region.

Cleared rooms also drop gold, hearts, wood, stone and sometimes captive followers. Bosses add Commandment Stone fragments to the haul. That turns every miniboss into a long-term investment rather than just an obstacle.

How to Unlock Anura, Anchordeep and Silk Cradle

Each new region in Cult of the Lamb opens once your cult reaches a set number of living followers: seven for Anura, nine for Anchordeep and twelve for Silk Cradle. Darkwood needs only one, and the final fight against The One Who Waits requires twenty.

Followers have to be alive and at the base to count. A death can drop you below a gate overnight. That happened to me right before Anchordeep, when an elderly follower passed away while I slept.

Each region also holds guardian bosses and a bishop at the end. So the path to every bishop runs through both your recruiting and your fighting.

Follower Counts That Open Each Region

The gates rise in small steps after Anura: seven, then nine, then twelve. That spacing feels gentle, yet each recruit costs food, a bed and attention. For that reason, I aim for two extra followers above every gate as a buffer against deaths.

New members come from rescues inside crusades, from captives tied up in dungeon rooms, and from Helob, a merchant who sells followers for gold. Indoctrinating a recruit also lets you choose their look and name. Varied looks make it easier to spot the sick or troubled ones at a glance.

The Guardian Bosses Before Each Bishop

Every region has three guardian bosses before its bishop, one per crusade. Darkwood sends Amdusias, Valefar and Barbatos at you in turn. Beating all three opens the door to the bishop’s chamber.

Anura follows the same pattern with Gusion, Eligos and Zepar. Anchordeep and Silk Cradle repeat it with tougher fights and denser rooms. These fights preview each region’s enemy patterns, so the bishop rarely surprises a player who paid attention.

Bishop Hearts, Crown Powers and The Gateway

Leshy, Heket, Kallamar and Shamura each drop a Bishop Heart when they fall. Spending a heart at the Temple unlocks a new Crown power for the Lamb. These powers stay for every future run, unlike tarot cards or weapons.

With all four bishops beaten, The Gateway opens. Many players rate Kallamar in Anchordeep as the hardest of the four, and my own deaths agree. At the very end, The One Who Waits asks you to kneel, and refusing him leads to a very different final fight.

How to Unlock Doctrines and Rituals at the Temple

Doctrines unlock when you combine three Commandment Stone fragments into one full stone and spend it in the Temple’s Crown menu. Each doctrine choice offers two options, and many of those options add new rituals, so doctrines and rituals grow together.

Fragments come from three sources: follower level-ups, minibosses and dungeon merchants. Level-ups are the steady supply, because every follower who fills their meter hands over one fragment.

The choices are permanent, though. I picked a harsh afterlife doctrine on my first save and lived with grumpy mourners for hours. Think about the kind of cult you want before you commit.

Commandment Stones and the Five Doctrine Categories

Doctrines sit in five categories: Work and Worship, Possessions, Sustenance, Afterlife, and Law and Order. Each category has four tiers, and each tier asks you to choose one of two doctrines. That adds up to 40 doctrines in total, but every pick locks out its partner for the rest of the save.

Early on, Sustenance choices tend to pay off fastest, because food problems hit first. Work and Worship picks that speed up Devotion come next, since Devotion drives building unlocks.

Rituals Worth the Bones Early On

Rituals cost bones and sometimes other materials, and each one has a cooldown. The Feast ritual fills every follower’s hunger at once, which can save a starving cult in a single evening. The Fast ritual does the opposite job, pausing hunger so you can leave on a long crusade.

Morale rituals, like the Bonfire ritual, give a quick faith boost when things slip. However, no ceremony can fix a cult that lacks beds or toilets. I treat them as emergency tools, not as a plan. The Resurrection ritual sits deeper in the Afterlife tree and can bring back a loved follower at a steep cost.

Daily Sermons and the Loyalty Meter

You can deliver one sermon per day at the Temple. It raises loyalty for every follower present, lifts faith, and leaves a small donation of gold behind. Blessing a follower one on one adds a little more loyalty on top.

When a follower’s Loyalty meter fills, they level up and hand over a fragment. After that, they also produce more Devotion at the Shrine. That makes the morning preaching the cheapest progress in the whole game, and I never leave for a crusade without it.

How Devotion, Faith and Follower Needs Drive Progress

Devotion is the resource followers produce by worshipping at the Shrine, and the Lamb spends it on Divine Inspiration to unlock new buildings. Faith is a separate, cult-wide meter that tracks trust in the Lamb, and it falls when food, rest or health go missing.

Both meters feed each other. Happy followers worship harder, and better buildings keep them happy. A faith collapse breaks that loop fast, because unhappy followers stop working and start whispering.

Followers also age, gain traits and fall ill. A Faithful follower shrugs off bad news, while a Lazy one drags down the work output of the whole camp.

Shrine Devotion and Divine Inspiration Unlocks

Followers worship at the Shrine during work hours, and each one adds Devotion over time. Higher-level followers add more, which rewards you for keeping veterans alive. Upgrading the Shrine also raises how much Devotion it can store.

Divine Inspiration turns that Devotion into blueprints. My first picks are always farm plots, a better cooking fire and an outhouse, because those three solve most early complaints. Decorations can wait, since they lift faith but do nothing for hunger.

Hunger, Illness and Sleep at the Cult Base

Every follower needs a meal, a bed and a clean camp. Hunger drops through the day, and meals from the cooking fire refill it. Poop and vomit left on the ground spread illness, so an outhouse and regular cleanup matter more than they sound.

Sleep is the quiet trap. Followers without beds sleep on the dirt, lose faith and get sick more often. A basic shelter costs very little. I build one the same day a recruit arrives.

Dissenters, Old Age and Death in the Flock

A follower with low faith can turn into a dissenter and spread doubt to others nearby. The fix is a prison, followed by daily re-education until their faith recovers. Leaving dissenters loose for even two days can turn one problem into four.

Old followers eventually die of natural causes. Their bodies spread illness if you leave them out, so bury them or compost them quickly. Then again, a well-timed funeral can turn a loss into a small faith boost, depending on the doctrines you chose.

What Fleeces, Relics and Collectibles Add to a Run

A new Fleece changes the rules of every crusade the Lamb takes, while relics give one rechargeable power per run that refills as you deal damage. Pairing the right Fleece with the right relic shapes a run before the first room loads.

Neither system is required to finish the story. Still, both widen the gap between a scrappy run and a smooth one, especially in Silk Cradle.

Outside combat, the game packs in side collectibles: follower forms, base decorations, fish species and Knucklebones opponents. These matter less for raw power. They matter a lot for faith and for fun.

Fleeces From Holy Talisman Pieces

Holy Talisman pieces drop during crusades and quests, and a full set forms a talisman key. You then spend that key at the Temple to unlock a new Fleece.

Most Fleeces trade one weakness for one strength. One raises damage at the cost of health, while another changes how your hearts work. I swap Fleeces by region rather than by habit, and that small change cut my deaths in Anura noticeably.

Relics From Chemach and How They Charge

Relics arrived with a free update. Chemach, a new character in Darkwood, hands you your first set of 13. You equip one relic per crusade, and it charges as you deal damage.

The best choice covers your weapon’s gap. A slow hammer pairs well with a crowd-control relic, while a fast dagger benefits from a healing one. I rarely enter Anchordeep without something defensive.

Follower Forms, Knucklebones and Fishing

Follower forms are cosmetic skins for recruits, and new ones unlock through play, extra packs and Arcade Edition exclusives. They add nothing to stats. Even so, a cult full of odd creatures makes every morning check-in more fun.

Knucklebones is a dice game you play against Ratau, Flinky, Klunko and Shrumy for gold coins. Fishing uses a simple timing bar, and one achievement asks you to catch every fish species. Both offer low-stress ways to earn coins between crusades.

Common Mistakes That Starve a New Lamb Cult

Most early losses in Cult of the Lamb come from neglect at the cult base, not from defeats inside a crusade. A run can take roughly ten to fifteen real minutes, and the base keeps ticking the whole time. Hunger, filth and doubt build quietly until you return to a mess.

Most beginner advice focuses on combat builds, so these home-front errors get far less attention. On my first save, I lost five followers in two days because I chased guardian bosses instead of building beds. The game warns you, but the warnings are easy to miss mid-fight.

Fixing these habits pays twice. Gold coins and Devotion pile up faster once the base runs smoothly, and the Shrine never sits idle.

Leaving for Long Crusades With an Empty Food Store

Before every crusade, check the food stock and the farm plots. Followers eat at set times, and an empty larder means faith drops while you fight. Cooking a stack of meals first takes about a minute and protects the whole trip.

Long crusades make this worse. The Fast ritual covers the gap if you have it. Most new players, however, unlock it later than they need it.

Chasing Bishops Before the Follower Gates Fill

Rushing a bishop with a thin cult leaves no safety margin. When you sit exactly at a gate, one death can stall your progress until another recruit turns up. Recruits arrive at random, so that stall can last several runs.

Sitting two followers above each gate removes that risk. It also brings more Devotion, more level-ups and more fragments over the same stretch of play.

Losing Gold Coins to Midas and Bad Gambles

Midas, a golden thief, can appear in Darkwood and steal 60 percent of the gold you carry. You can track him down later to win it back. The safer move, though, is to spend gold at the base before you leave.

Knucklebones can drain coins too, because tougher opponents raise the stakes. Start with Ratau, since his games are cheap and the scoring rules click fast. Move up to Flinky and the others only once you win more often than you lose.

What Unholy Alliance Co-op and Woolhaven Add

With the Unholy Alliance update, a second player can join as the Goat in local co-op, and the paid Woolhaven expansion opens a snowy new region once the main story ends. Both stretch the game far past the base campaign.

Woolhaven only opens on a save with a finished base game. Reviewers describe it as close to the base game in length, with about 20 hours of new content for a returning player.

Two difficulty options also raise the stakes for veterans. Penitence and Permadeath both reward players who already know every system cold.

Lamb and Goat Local Co-op

The Goat shares the screen and the crusade with the Lamb. Both players fight, collect loot and return to the same cult base afterward.

Co-op makes dungeon runs easier, but it does not split the management load. One player still makes the doctrine calls, so agree on the cult’s direction before you start. I found it most fun on a big screen with two controllers.

Penitence and Permadeath Difficulty Options

Penitence turns the Lamb into a survivor with needs of its own. The Lamb has to eat and sleep like a follower, which adds pressure to every trip away from camp.

Permadeath ends the entire save when the Lamb falls. I only suggest it after a full clear, because the early regions punish small mistakes harshly.

Woolhaven, Yngya and the Winter Dungeons

Woolhaven sends the Lamb to the abandoned mountain home of lambkind. There, Yngya, the God of Winter, asks you to return the lost souls of lambs. Each soul makes Yngya stronger, and winter grows harsher for your cult as a result.

The expansion adds two dungeons, Ewefall and The Rot. Marchosias leads the hostile Free Pack in Ewefall, while The Rot corrupts everything inside the mountain. Back home, followers now need warmth, and a new ranch lets you breed animals for wool and meat. It launched on PC and consoles in January 2026.

Best Cult of the Lamb Tips and Tricks for Beginners

The fastest early wins in Cult of the Lamb come from routines, not from rare drops. A steady daily rhythm protects followers while you fight and keeps Devotion flowing.

My own routine is a short checklist: preach, bless, cook, clean, then leave. That order keeps faith high during long runs and makes each region’s minibosses less stressful.

None of these Cult of the Lamb tips need rare items or perfect rolls. They work on day one, and they still matter after the last bishop falls.

Pick Curses That Fit the Weapon You Rolled

Slow weapons need curses that buy space, like wide blasts or tentacles. Fast weapons pair better with damage curses that finish wounded enemies. I skip any curse that does the same job my weapon already does.

Swapping is fine when a better pickup shows up mid-run. Just check the Fervour cost first. A strong curse you can cast once per room often loses to a cheaper one you can cast three times.

Spend Divine Inspiration on Food and Farms First

Fancy buildings look tempting, but food carries the early game. Farm plots, a seed silo and a second cooking station cut daily chores a lot.

Assigning followers to farm and cook frees you to fight. Once food runs itself, push the next round of Devotion into a Shrine upgrade. After that, decorations finally make sense.

Fix Faith Drops With a Sermon Before Each Run

Faith swings fast after deaths, illness or broken promises. Preaching right before you leave lifts the whole cult at once, and blessings top up the shaky members.

Watch the faith meter when you return, too. If it dipped while you were away, find the cause before the next run. Otherwise, a small dip becomes a slide toward dissent.

Frequently Asked Questions About Cult of the Lamb

Is Cult of the Lamb available on Android?

No official Android version exists on Google Play. Cult of the Lamb reached phones through Apple Arcade on December 4, 2025, and it also sells on Steam, GOG, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Android listings on third-party sites are unofficial emulator wrappers, not releases from Massive Monster, so treat them with caution.

How long does it take to beat the main story?

Most players finish the main story in roughly 15 to 16 hours by focusing on the four regions and the final fight. Side quests, fishing and doctrine experiments stretch a first save much longer. In my experience, a relaxed pace with heavy base-building easily passes 25 hours before the credits roll.

Does the game still get new content?

Yes. Free updates named Relics of the Old Faith, Sins of the Flesh and Unholy Alliance have added relics, a vice system and co-op over the years. Sins of the Flesh introduced Sin, a resource earned through indulgent rituals and drinks. The newest paid expansion, Woolhaven, then added a whole mountain region.

Who Should Start a Flock in Cult of the Lamb Today

This game suits players who enjoy short action runs but want a real reason to come home afterward. If you liked the Moonlighter loop and want higher stakes, it is an easy pick. On iPhone and iPad, the Arcade Edition is the cheapest way in, while PC and console buyers get years of free updates for one price. I have restarted my cult three times, and every save still pulls me back for one more crusade and one more morning sermon. Build beds first, preach every day, and your flock will carry you all the way to The One Who Waits.
