Description

Magic Survival gives you one thumb of movement and a kit of magic that fires on its own against endless waves of corrupted spirits. Newer players stuck before the last wave will get a clear build order for spells, fusions, Classes and gems. The biggest power spike arrives at level 25, when your first Magic Combination fuses two max-level spells.

How to Play Magic Survival: Auto-Cast Survival Basics

Magic Survival is a top-down roguelike where your character moves with one thumb while every spell fires on its own at nearby enemies. You steer through the horde and pick one new magic from three choices at every level-up until the last wave ends the run.

LEME, a solo developer based in Korea, first put the game on Google Play on October 31, 2019. It has since passed 5 million downloads. The listing also holds a 4.6-star rating from more than 120,000 reviews. That is a huge player base for a game built by one person.

Good Magic Survival strategy starts with accepting that you never aim. Every real decision happens on the level-up screen, and the rest is footwork.

How Auto-Casting Magic and One-Hand Control Work

The store listing sells the game on one-hand control, and that is exactly how it plays. Your thumb drags a virtual stick. Auto-cast spells fire on their own timers and hunt the closest targets, so your position decides what they hit first.

Moving in wide, slow circles pulls the swarm into a tight trail behind you. Area spells then land on a packed group instead of scattered stragglers. In my runs, looping like this filled the mana bar noticeably faster than running in straight lines. It also kept escape routes open on both sides.

The Homunculus Subject and the Wizard War Story

The setup is short and grim. Decades of wizard war left death magic soaked into the land. Nature spirits absorbed those remnants and turned into demons that devour every living creature.

You play a homunculus, an artificial test Subject sent to fight back. The dark palette and silent, drifting enemies carry that tone well.

Magic Survival vs Vampire Survivors, Survivor.io and 20 Minutes Till Dawn

Magic Survival reached Android in 2019, years before the bullet heaven boom it helped start. The creator of Vampire Survivors has named it as an inspiration. Many players still call it the original of the genre. That history shows in how lean the design feels.

The real gap shows up in upgrades. Vampire Survivors evolves a max-level weapon by pairing it with a passive item, and you keep that item afterward. A Magic Combination here fuses two max-level spells, but the secondary spell disappears for good. By contrast, Survivor.io leans on gear and chapter progress while 20 Minutes Till Dawn makes you aim your own shots.

How Level-Up Picks From 51 Spells Shape Every Run

Each level-up in Magic Survival pauses the action and offers three magic options drawn from one shared pool of 51 spells. You pick one to add or upgrade and slowly shape a build around the few attacks your Class favors.

Mana works as the experience resource. Infected spirits drop it when they die, and field items add extra bursts. A full bar triggers the next level, up to a cap of 100.

That cap makes every pick count. With at most 100 choices, a slot wasted on a spell you never upgrade costs real damage later. Special passives also appear now and then, so read each screen before you tap.

Offensive, Utility and Passive Magic Types

The 51 spells split into four groups. There are 17 offensive magics, 4 utility magics, 8 regular passives and 22 special passives. Offensive spells upgrade up to level 7. Utility spells stop at level 5.

Offensive magic deals your damage, and utility magic buffs your defense or movement instead. Regular passives raise core stats like damage and cooldown speed. Special passives show up rarely, but they usually beat a regular passive when they do.

Skipping a Level-Up With a Mana Reclaim

The level-up screen never forces a pick. If all three options are useless, you can decline and take back part of the mana instead. However, the refund shrinks each time you use it, so treat it as an emergency valve.

I use a mana reclaim mostly after my build is set. Late in a run, it keeps a stray utility spell from clogging the slot my next fusion needs.

Enemy Scaling and the Final Wave of Each Zone

Enemy power scales with time, so minute 15 feels nothing like minute 3. Waves arrive on a fixed schedule. Surviving the final wave clears the zone and opens the next one.

The last minutes hit hardest. Enemy stats keep climbing while your level-ups slow down. A utility spell that keeps you alive through that push often matters more than one extra damage upgrade. My early clears only started landing once I respected that.

How to Unlock Magic Combination at Levels 25, 50 and 75

At levels 25, 50 and 75, Magic Combination appears as a level-up option in every Magic Survival run. It merges two max-level spells into one stronger primary spell and permanently removes the secondary spell for the rest of the run.

The community wiki lists around 60 fusion recipes, and most strong builds use all three slots. That makes fusion timing the heart of any serious Magic Survival strategy. Unlike most roguelike upgrades, each fusion also takes a spell away from you.

Growth Passives take over once you pass level 100. They round out a finished build with one-time bonuses instead of new spells.

Why Both Spells Must Reach Max Level First

A fusion only appears if both spells sit at their maximum level. Offensive spells top out at level 7. One pair therefore eats roughly 14 of your first 24 picks. That leaves very little room for passives before the first window.

Choose your first fusion pair by minute three or four and funnel upgrades into it. Spreading points across five half-built spells leaves the level 25 slot empty. The next window then waits until level 50, which feels like forever under pressure.

Primary vs Secondary Spell: What You Keep and What You Lose

The primary spell stays in your kit and gains the fusion effect. By contrast, the secondary spell vanishes and cannot join any later combination. Pick a secondary you would not miss on its own.

Weak early spells make good secondaries. Your strongest offensive spell should almost always be the primary. I once fused away my main damage source by mistake. The run fell apart within five minutes.

Growth Passives After Level 100

Reaching level 100 does not end your upgrades. At that point the game swaps in Growth Passives, one-level versions of the regular passives with wider buffs. Each one applies once and then leaves the pool.

These picks matter most in Infinite Mode, where a run keeps going long after level 100. Stack defensive ones first, because enemy damage keeps rising while your spell list stays fixed.

How to Unlock Ultimate Magic After Clearing the City

Clearing the City zone in Normal Mode unlocks Ultimate Magic, a late-run upgrade for one finished Magic Combination. Each Ultimate Magic then requires character level 100 plus one specific Magic Combination and a matching Class and Subject in the same run.

The system arrived in a later update. Most older tip lists about the game went online before it existed. That is why so many of them skip it entirely. Today it defines the endgame.

You choose your Class, your Subject and its starting artifact before the run even starts. Only the level 100 target and the fusion itself happen mid-run. The real work therefore begins in the menus.

The Four Requirements for an Ultimate Magic

Every Ultimate Magic checks four boxes. You need the named Magic Combination, the named Class, the named Subject and character level 100. Miss any one of them and the option never shows up.

The payoff is huge when all four line up. One lightning-based Ultimate Magic, for example, makes bolts strike instantly, fires six at once and triples their damage.

Planning a Run Around One Ultimate Magic

Pick the Ultimate Magic before you pick the zone. First, set the matching Class and Subject in the menus. Then treat the required fusion as your first Magic Combination at level 25. Leave the second and third fusions for flexible picks.

The hard part is reaching level 100 alive. Cooldown artifacts from a black chest can speed up that climb, since faster casts mean faster kills and more mana. Even so, take defensive passives early because a greedy all-damage build rarely lives long enough.

How to Level Up Classes With Research Material and Gems

Twenty gems buy one Research Material in Magic Survival and 180 gems buy a pack of ten for leveling up Classes. Each material lands on a random one of the 24 Classes and pushes it toward a permanent level 5 bonus.

Leveling one Class all the way takes 45 materials. That breaks down into 3 for level 2 and 6 for level 3. Level 4 needs 12 more, and level 5 needs 24. Maxing every Class takes 1,080 materials in total.

Research Material is not the same as research points, which you earn by dying in runs. Because the material lands randomly, you cannot target a favorite Class. That randomness is the most overlooked factor in long-term Magic Survival strategy.

Class Level 2 Damage Bonuses and Spell Focus

At level 2, most Classes add a damage bonus to one associated magic. That bonus multiplies with your other damage sources instead of simply stacking. As a result, it scales well late in a run.

A few general Classes, such as Arcanist, Scholar and Archmage, boost all magic instead of one spell. Those suit players who have not settled on a main attack yet. Spell-specific Classes pay off later. They shine once you know which offensive spell you plan to fuse around.

Permanent Level 5 Bonuses That Carry Across Classes

The level 5 bonus is the real prize. Once a Class hits level 5, its bonus stays active no matter which Class you pick for a run.

That turns every maxed Class into a permanent stat boost for the whole account. The 24 materials for the final level also outweigh the first 21 combined. Like many bullet heaven games on mobile, the game is free with ads and in-game purchases. Those purchases include random items like these packs, so spend with that randomness in mind.

How to Get Subjects and Their Starting Artifacts

Subjects in the Test Subjects menu of Magic Survival cost 800 gems each except the free default one. Every Subject starts runs with its own artifact and adds a permanent stat boost to your account from the moment you buy it.

The menu holds 25 Subjects in total. Each one is another homunculus with its own starting artifact and account bonus. The Subject and the Class are separate choices. You can pair any Subject with a completely different Class.

Unlike Research Material, a Subject purchase is never random. Every 800 gems buys exactly the bonus you chose. That guarantee matters a lot on a young account.

800-Gem Subjects and Permanent Stat Boosts

Compare the costs directly. A fully leveled Class needs 45 materials, roughly 810 gems at the ten-pack rate. However, those materials scatter across 24 Classes. The real cost of maxing one chosen Class therefore runs far higher.

A Subject costs 800 gems and delivers its stat boost instantly. Nothing about that purchase depends on luck.

Pairing a Starting Artifact With a Different Class

A starting artifact shapes the first few minutes more than any single level-up. Some artifacts boost one specific spell. Those line up well with a Class whose level 2 bonus hits the same spell. Together they give that spell a head start before the swarm thickens.

Every Ultimate Magic also names a specific Subject. Owning a wide spread of Subjects therefore keeps more Ultimate Magic options open later. Treat the Test Subjects menu as a long-term collection rather than a one-time pick.

How Artifacts, Chests and Research Points Build Long-Term Power

When a chest drops mid-run in Magic Survival, it contains three artifacts that boost your damage, cooldown or projectile count. Research points work across runs instead since every death adds more of them for permanent upgrades in the Research tab.

Artifacts reset when a run ends, so they shape one attempt at a time. Research upgrades and journal entries stay with you. Each later attempt gets a little easier as a result.

The two layers work best together. First, let artifacts steer the build inside a run. Then spend your points so better skills and chests appear more often next time. Neither layer carries a weak build alone.

Brown, Special and Black Chests

Three chest types show up during a run. Brown chests hold a mix of normal, rare, epic, special or legendary artifacts. A special chest contains only special artifacts, and a black chest holds only legendary ones.

A black chest is the moment to rethink your build. Legendary artifacts often change which spell deserves your next upgrades, so read all three before you choose. Brown chests still matter, though. A rare artifact for your main spell beats a legendary one for a spell you never use.

Earning Research Points From Every Death

Death in the game always pays something. Each run, win or lose, awards research points to spend in the Research tab.

Research upgrades mostly target passive skills, such as raising the odds that certain skills appear. Some also raise the chance of treasure chests spawning. Put early points into those odds upgrades, since they make every future run richer.

Journal Entries and First-Clear Zone Rewards

Clearing a zone for the first time unlocks a new journal entry and a first-clear reward. The journal slowly pieces together the wizard war and the fall of the nature spirits. Those infected spirits read very differently once you know their story. It gives the long grind a quiet sense of purpose.

Clear rewards also feed your gem supply. In my experience, pushing one new zone per session paid out more than farming an easy zone over and over.

What Normal Mode Zones and Infinite Mode Add to a Run

Unlike Normal Mode, Infinite Mode in Magic Survival has no end timer and keeps raising enemy strength forever. Normal Mode instead chains more than 13 timed zones together and clearing each zone’s final wave opens the next zone in line.

Each zone brings its own background, events and enemy mix. A standard clear takes around 20 minutes. One zone therefore fits neatly into a lunch break. Longer sessions suit the endless runs better.

The City marks the big midpoint milestone, because clearing it unlocks Ultimate Magic. After that, later zones test builds that already use all three Magic Combination slots. Those zones rarely forgive a build with gaps.

More Than 13 Zones and the City Milestone

Zones unlock in order, and each first-clear reward pays out only once. Later zones throw faster, tougher enemies at you from the opening minute. A build that felt safe earlier can crumble quickly there.

The City deserves special planning. Bring your best Class and Subject pairing there, since the clear permanently opens Ultimate Magic for every future run. I only cleared it on my third attempt. The winning build carried a defensive utility spell the first two lacked.

Infinite Mode Scaling and Long Runs

Infinite Mode removes the finish line entirely. Enemies keep scaling without pause. A build that coasts through a 20-minute zone can collapse a few minutes later. Growth Passives become your main source of new power past level 100.

These endless runs test how complete your build really is. They reward all three fusions, an Ultimate Magic if you qualify, and defensive picks over greedy damage.

Common Magic Survival Strategy Mistakes That End Runs Early

Poor spell pacing ends most failed runs before the final wave, far more often than low Class levels do. Players who spread upgrades thin reach level 25 with nothing ready to fuse. Each of these mistakes feels harmless in the moment.

The other big leak happens outside the run, in the gem shop. Random Research Material looks cheap, yet it rarely lands on the Class you actually play.

Plenty of long-time players give struggling newcomers the same advice. Stop fleeing so much. Let offensive magic do the work instead. That one change turned several of my losing runs into clears.

Fleeing Too Much Instead of Letting Auto-Cast Spells Work

Constant running spreads enemies out and starves your area spells of targets. Fewer kills mean less mana, and a slower level curve means weaker picks when the pressure spikes.

Hold ground near the edge of the swarm and circle slowly instead. Your auto-cast spells then hit dense groups, and the mana flow stays steady. Break away only when your health drops or a large wave closes in from two sides.

Fusing a Half-Built Spell or the Wrong Secondary

The level 25 Magic Combination window rewards preparation. Arriving without a max-level pair wastes that first window entirely.

The opposite mistake hurts even more. Picking your main damage spell as the secondary deletes it for the rest of the run. Always double-check which spell sits in the primary slot before you confirm. No later fusion brings a lost spell back.

Spending Gems on Random Research Material Before Subjects

Buying enough ten-packs to max every Class costs roughly 19,440 gems. Most accounts will never get close, so the order you spend in matters more than the total.

On my second account, I bought three Subjects before touching research packs. Their guaranteed stat boosts made the early zones noticeably easier. Then I switched to research packs once zone clears kept the gem income steady.

Best Magic Survival Tips and Tricks for Beginners

The fastest early gains in Magic Survival come from one offensive spell pushed to level 7 before anything else. In my experience, one max-level attack clears early waves faster than four spells at level 3.

Beginners also tend to ignore the account layer. Gems, Classes and Subjects decide how strong you start before the first enemy spawns. A single Subject bonus shows up in every run. That quiet edge adds up across dozens of attempts.

The most common beginner death comes in the last five minutes of a zone. Enemy scaling outpaces a thin build right then. Defense has to be in place before that point, not during it.

Push One Offensive Spell to Level 7 Before Level 25

Pick the offensive spell that matches your Class bonus and take every upgrade the level-up screen offers for it. Then start a second offensive spell as the fusion partner.

Passives can wait until both spells are close to max. This order also sets up the first Magic Combination on time. Resist the shiny new spell that shows up at level 8. It rarely beats a finished pair.

Chase a First-Clear Reward in a New Zone Each Session

Replaying a zone you already cleared feels safe, but its first-clear reward is gone. A new zone still earns research points even when you fail it. Each attempt also shows you the enemy mix before the real push.

Aim for one new zone per week of casual play. That pace kept my gem income high enough to unlock a new Subject every few weeks.

Save One Slot for a Utility Spell Before the Final Wave

Utility magic looks weak next to a max-level fusion, so new players skip it. Yet the final wave is where most runs die. A defensive utility spell covers exactly that moment. Because the game runs on one-hand control, you cannot dodge your way out of every surround.

Take one utility spell by roughly level 30 and upgrade it when damage options run dry. It costs you little early. Keep it out of your fusion plans so it stays in your kit.

Frequently Asked Questions About Magic Survival

Can You Play Magic Survival Offline?

Magic Survival supports offline play according to its Google Play listing. Full runs work on a plane or a subway with no signal. The free Android app carries a 7+ age rating for mild violence and fear. That makes it a fair pick for younger players too.

How Long Does a Magic Survival Run Take?

A single zone follows its own timer. An Infinite Mode push toward level 100 and the Growth Passives beyond it often stretches past 30 minutes. Clearing the whole zone chain for the first time takes most players several weeks of casual sessions. Stick to one Normal Mode zone per sitting when time is short.

Does Magic Survival Still Get Updates?

The latest store update added new Ultimate Magic options, new artifacts and a reworked enemy distribution. Spells you already own now appear more often as level-up choices. That change makes planned fusions noticeably easier to finish. Updates keep arriving years after the 2019 launch.

Why Build-Focused Players Should Play Magic Survival

Magic Survival suits players who enjoy planning a build more than testing their reflexes. If you like bullet heaven games but want deeper choices than Vampire Survivors or Survivor.io offer, start here.

A good Magic Survival strategy rewards patience in the menus as much as footwork in the field. After many hours with it, my honest verdict is simple. No other roguelike on Android makes a single level-up choice feel this important. The homunculus and its war against the infected spirits deserve a spot on your phone.
